Diabetes often means that you have to take extra precautions when you come down with an illness. The symptoms of a cold or the flu can affect your blood glucose levels. Vomiting and nausea can lead to dehydration issues. Infections also trigger increased levels of blood sugar. It is extremely important to take steps to monitor and manage your diabetes when faced with a common illness. It will keep the complications at bay.

The first step is to check your glucose levels at least every four hours. Do it more often if you feel any symptoms of high or low blood sugar. If you find your blood sugar above 240 mg/dl (13.3 mmol/L), test for ketones in the urine. If you find ketones, get hold of your doctor immediately. These are byproducts caused by your body burning fatty acids instead of glucose. This may mean that your insulin levels are dangerously low due to the illness or an underlying illness or infection. It is a well known fact that is critical to get medical help as soon as possible as it can lead to ketoacidosis in patients with Diabetes 2 and in some cases to a diabetic coma.

Take your temperature regularly as well. This can also show if an infection is lying in there. Drink alot of fluids throughout the day. If you have nausea, attempt to keep down water. If you can’t hold down water or food, consult your medico immediately. You might need to go to the emergency room before severe dehydration hits. If you are taking insulin injections, do not stop them. It is also essential to keep your blood glucose readings in check. Drinking something with sugar will help keep your glucose in normal ranges if you cannot keep down solids. Consult with your doctor about any over the counter medications you might take. Some contain high levels of sugar and that is not good for people with type 2 diabetes. There are versions available that are not though.

Call your doctor if you have any nausea or vomiting. Call your doctor if you have a fever higher than 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.3 degrees Celsius). Call your doctor if you cannot keep fluids or solids down. Call your medico if your blood sugar readings goes above 180 mg/dL (10 mmol/L) or falls below 70 mg/dL (3.8 mmol/l). Call your doctor if you develop ketones in your urine. Monitoring your health is very important when you are sick and have Type II Diabetes as well.

The general perception is that the ill health effects of Type 2 Diabetes cannot be cured with the help of dietary changes alone. To an extent this is right, but not always, and not in every case. This is because following an altered diet may not help in controlling the underlying diabetes, if the original diet followed was not the root cause of the diabetes in the first place. You might know that the primary cause may have been for example, a lack of exercise, chronic stress, and or both.

diet adjustments are made so as to ‘remove or lower’ the excessive glucose or sugar load from the bloodstream. Though this should be the first step that any person diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes needs to follow, such adjustments in the diet alone are not always capable of curing one from the ill effects of Diabetes 2.

Regarding the diet, Type 2 diabetes is also partly caused by the lack of ‘good’ fats and an excess of ‘poor’ quality fats in our diets. Besides contributing to the onset of Type 2 Diabetes, these ‘bad’ fats can additionally cause other problems such as heart disease, obesity and a few more other dreaded health related conditions.

Diet alterations can be used to control and cure one from the ill effects of Diabetes 2, if done intelligently. So, one needs to understand various parameters in order to ‘implement and design’ a favorable diet routine that can cure one from the ill effects of Diabetes 2.

PCF ratio is one of these important parameters. PCF stands for protein, carbohydrates and fats. Understand that proper ratios of PCF comprise of 20 % protein, 30% fats (good fat) and 50 % of carbohydrates.

One can consume these proteins from fish, chicken, eggs and nuts, etc, but at the same time, one should also adjust the intake of these things in a very controlled, and limited manner. That means, watch your portion size! Note that in individuals with advanced kidney disease, an excessive intake of protein can lead to further kidney failure, which could be a major problem in some diabetic patients.

Carbohydrates may be taken from many sources, including fruits, vegetables and wholegrains. Those with Type 2 diabetes should ensure that the carbohydrate they are taking in, should be one with a low Glycaemic Index (low GI) value.

Fats come in several types, and the more monounsaturated fat is, the better it will be for you. Fats can be taken in from Oleic sunflower oil, olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil.

The one particular fat which is essential for the healthy functioning of the body is a fat commonly referred to as an ‘omega 3 fatty acid’. These are found in oily fish like salmon, and also found in flaxseed which is also known as linseed (which should be ground before consuming, otherwise it cannot be absorbed from the intestines). The ‘saturated’ fats are the worst for your health, and are absolutely not good for diabetic patients. Finally, one should also aim to consume fiber in copious amounts, as this will help to slow digestion. Slowing digestion also means blood sugar levels will rise more slowly (rather than rising rapidly to high and dangerous levels). Keeping blood sugar levels as low as possible is the ultimate goal of all diabetics. Fibre included in your diet is also thought to help you reduce the risk of obesity, as it is considered to help you feel fuller for longer and help you eat less. An intelligent diet plan can not only help you control, but also help cure you from the ill effects of Type 2 diabetes!

The results of the second part of the Women’s Health Initiative (WIH), a federal study on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and breast cancer, were released December 13, 2008 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. The new findings show that a much higher risk of breast cancer is one of several hormone replacement therapy side effects.

HRT Side Effects

The results of this new study indicate that the risks of HRT far outweigh the benefits for most women. Doctors thought HRT would lower the incidence of heart disease and osteoporosis, problems women may face after menopause.

The WIH had two parts. In the first study, more than 16,000 women were selected on the basis of age, weight, and other health factors. These women were randomly assigned to a group that took estrogen and progestin pills, or or to one that took a placebo.

The researchers found much higher risks of heart problems and breast cancer in women using female hormone replacement therapy. In fact, the risk of breast cancer increased by 26% among women using HRT, espcially for those women who used HRT for five years or more. This finding caused an early end to the first part of the WIH in 2002.

All the questions researchers had weren’t answered, however. Did women who started on HRT when they first entered menopause in their 50′s, and who used HRT for shorter periods of time, still face higher risks of breast cancer and heart disease? Most of the women in the first study were in their 60s and well past menopause.

In the new study, researchers followed over 15,000 women who met the new criteria through July 2005. The researchers kept track of breast cancer cases as they occurred over time.

The results? The risk of breast cancer increased when women started HRT, hit a high point when the study ended, and then fell as nearly all the women stopped taking estrogen and progestin pills. Results at the high point showed that the breast cancer risk for HRT users was twice that of the others.

Is HRT Really Safe?

Conventional medical practioners are quick to reassure their patients that most women won’t get breast cancer if they use HRT for a short time. They say that the increased cancer risk from using HRT for two years amounts to only a few extra cases of breast cancer per year for every 1000 women using estrogen and progestin pills.

There’s no way to know which women will develop breast cancer and which ones won’t. Plus the risk of breast cancer does go up the longer a woman uses HRT.

Natural Treatment For Menopause

Women have always gone through menopause. This is nothing new. It’s a normal part of every woman’s life. Menopause is not an illness and shouldn’t be treated like one.

For centuries women have used herbal remedies for menopause. These natural remedies have few, if any, side effects.

Women should take it upon themselves to learn more about HRT and breast cancer. Natural treatments for menopause are readily available and quite inexpensive. It may be possible to find relief from common menopause symptoms without increasing your risk of breast cancer.
